I’ve seen the name of the Loved Ones floating around the scene for awhile but this is the first time I’m hearing the band’s music. The Loved Ones hail from Philly and features members of Paint To Black, The Explosion and Trial By Fire. “Build & Burn” is the band’s second full-length release and the second release on Fat Wreck Chords. One other notable thing about this record was it was produced by Bryan and Pete of the Bouncing Souls, along with Bob Strakele.

The Loved Ones seem like a non-Fat Wreck Chords’ band to me, but I think that’s a good thing because they aren’t pigeon holed to just punk rock. They do have have a punk sound but they also have some slower rock tunes as well. One minute they will do a punk song like “Pretty Good Year” and then do a slower song like “Selfish Masquerade.” Usually when bands try to slow it down, it just sounds crappy but the Loved Ones do a good job with that style of music as well. I was quite surprised about this album and really liked the Loved Ones’ music. If you enjoyed their last album, be sure to pick this one up as well.

Bottom Line: I was surprised by this. This album is pretty good!
