Fat City Magazine is a top notch magazine that releases a free comp every once and awhile with the magazine. They were so kind to send me both the magazine (which was read thoroughly in the shitter) and the Cd. The compilation is titled perfectly, and is what it is…Bands they like. The Cd starts off with an out of print Swingin’ Utters song, a Cock Sparrer cover of “Where are they Now.” They do that song well and I heard it once before, but not sure where. Fat City managed to score an unreleased Joe Strummer live track “Trash City”, recorded from the the soundboard at The Roxy in Boston. Hearing rare Strummer is always a treat! There’s a demo of Face to Face’s “Blind,” which sounds pretty much the same as the normal version but it’s a demo so…I also like the alternate version of “Unions and the Law” from the Street Dogs. It’s a rough mix from a recording session for Back to the World. Other bands featured on the compilation are Darkbuster (featuring Dicky Barrett), Gobshites, Gnarkill (featuring Jess & Bam Margera), Methadones and Chip Hanna covering “London Calling.” A part of the proceeds from the sale of the Fat City Magazine #9 will benefit the Joe Strummer Foundation for New Music. You can learn about the foundation or make your own donation at www.strummerville.com. So don’t download this album, because you’d be stealing from Joe Strummer’s charity. Plus it’s an interesting compilation and Fat City is an awesome magazine!

Bottom Line: Unreleased and rare tracks from lots of cool bands!
Notable Tracks: Where Are They Now- Swingin’ Utters, Fitzy needs a Haircut- Darkbuster, Trash City- Joe Strummer, Union and the Law- Street Dogs, London Calling- Chip Hanna
