Richard Linklater’s latest movie is an unofficial sequel to Dazed and Confused, a movie I still have yet to see. While the movie is a little bit of a college comedy cliche, I think it’s better than Linklater’s previous movie, Boyhood.
Everybody Wants Some!! takes place in 1980 and follows a group of guys on the baseball team at the fictional college Southeast Texas. Freshmen pitcher Jake (Blake Jenner) arrives at the team’s divey-looking house and meets some of his new teammates. There’s his roommate Billy (Will Brittain), Finnegan (Glen Powell), Roper (Ryan Guzman), Dale (Quinton Johnson), Plummer (Temple Baker) and the best player on the team McReynolds (Tyler Hoechlin). It’s the last weekend before school starts so all the guys are amped up for girls, booze, more girls and I guess baseball.
I wasn’t a fan of Boyhood but I liked this one. It brought me back to the early 80s, and the soundtrack was certainly awesome. Some of the characters I enjoyed more than others. Glen Powell’s Finn stole a lot of scenes. He kept reminding me of Zack Ward, but with long hair and a mustache. Tyler Hoechlin stood out to me as well. I can’t believe he was the kid in Road To Perdition. Tyler actually played college baseball so he was a no-brainer to be cast in this movie. Wyatt Russell plays a free-going stoner very well. Blake Jenner was okay as the sort of lead. His character was the center of the story but this is essentially an ensemble movie.
I liked the movie but still had some issues with it. There really wasn’t a plot to the movie and instead, we just felt like a fly on the wall to a baseball frat before school started. The movie felt like a college comedy cliche to me because it’s always the same. Guys look for girls, guys get drunk or high, some of them act like assholes, one guy finds a nice girl and wants to be with her, others tease him about it, etc. Besides that stuff, I also felt like some of the cast didn’t really have any personality. A lot of them blending in together. I guess that’s how it was in Texas in the 80s? But with some of my complaints out of the way, I still ended up liking the movie and would watch it again.
The extra for the Blu-Ray were pretty good and satisfying enough. Everybody Wants Some!! More Stuff That’s Not in the Movie is about 25 minutes long and features a collection of deleted scenes, alternate takes and outtakes. It’s an interesting way of presenting outtakes and deleted scenes. Usually they are put into separate sections.Other featurettes include one on Richard Linklater, one about the actors practicing for dancing and playing baseball, and there’s one of the actors baseball skills. A lot of them surprisingly played baseball. Wyatt Russell also played hockey for awhile before getting injured.
Everybody Wants Some!! will bring you back to the 80s. It will put a smile on your face for some things, other things not so much. Clothing, glasses and hair, geez, I need to burn all my photos from that decade. This movie isn’t Animal House funny but it’s got a few things in it that made me chuckle. The directing & writing was good and so was the acting. I just wish the cast was a little more diverse and they had more personality than a bunch of drunken, jock, frat guys.
