After a crappy Nascar movie, Will Ferrell is back on top with a figure skating movie. But wait, this isn’t just some ordinary figure skating movie! It’s a movie that features a pair of men figure skating. Comedy gold I tells ya!

Blades of Glory is about two rivals (Jimmy MacElroy, Chazz Michael Michaels) in figure skating having no choice but to pair up and compete for the gold medal. The rival skaters end up getting into a fight at the Olympics and the result of that is banishment from figure skating. The first guy is Jimmy MacElroy (Jon Heder) who was adopted at an early age by a millionaire. As a kid, he was a teenage heartthrob and trained really hard to be the best figure skater. Then there’s Chazz Michael Michaels (Will Ferrell), who’s the bad boy, sex addictive rockstar figure skater. Both struggle to live outside the figure skating world, until one day when they find out that they compete again. But the catch is that they have to compete as a male pair. It hasn’t been done before (for obvious reasons), but the former rivals reluctantly agree to it. Once the duo get into game shape, they have to face off against the creepy pair of brother and sister Stranz and Fairchild Van Waldenberg. Jimmy ends up falling for the enemies’ little cute sister, and the evil brother and sister try to use that as an advantage to get to the popular male skating pair. But besides having to deal with the enemy, Jimmy and Chazz have to deal with each other first and get pass their hatred for one another.

I saw Blades of Glory in the theaters and thought it was funny, but I wasn’t completely blown away by it like other Will Ferrell comedies. After seeing it the second time, I’ve come to realize it’s a far funnier film that I originally thought. I’m not really sure why I liked it a second time better, maybe it was seeing the movie with a group of friends instead of just by myself. Blades of Glory just seems like the type of movie you can watch over and over on cable. I’m not saying it’s the best movie by either Heder or Ferrell, but it’s still really funny. Seeing a lot of the guys training and beating the crap out of each other is hilarious. Also the secondary characters are great as well. Will Arnett and Amy Poehler as the deeply creepy brother-sister pair were hilarious because they put their real-life marriage into the characters. “So that’s how it is in their family.” It was just one long punchline the whole movie, and it finally paid off at the end. Jenna Fischer played the younger sister to the Van Waldenberg duo and I loved that she was in the movie. Besides being in lingerie, she’s also quite funny and sweet at the same time. Having real skaters and announcers in the movie was good as well because they had some funny lines. To me, Blades of Glory doesn’t seem like just a Will Ferrell movie because there’s so many funny people in it and they all have an important part. Of course the stuff on the ice was the best scenes in the movie, but the things that happen off the ice were good as well.

The Blades of Glory DVD has a decent amount of featurettes and extra goodies for fans of the movie. If you liked Blades of Glory, you definitely have to watch the extras because they are just as funny as the movie. There are so many funny interviews with all the actors, and even the directors gave me some laughs as well. I don’t think I ever saw Will Arnett do a serious interview and he certainly doesn’t start here. There’s 20 questions with Amy Poehler and Will Arnett that is a highlight for me. Those two together need to do more movies together because when they team up, they are effing hysterical. Besides lots of featurettes, you have some deleted scenes, a funny gag reel, and some alternate takes. This is a really good batch of bonus material for a comedy that’s for sure!

Blades of Glory is a funny comedy with interesting characters, hilarious plot and an outrageous ending that will leave you shaking your head. But in the end, you’ll probably be watching this movie all the time when it airs on TV. If you like movies from Will Ferrell and Jon Heder, be sure to buy or rent Blades of Glory on DVD. The movie is also available on HD DVD but something tells me you don’t want to see the clarity of Will Ferrell’s butt in his leotards.
