Gotta love good old Saturday morning cartoon classics! I remember the days, waking up early to catch the newest cartoons on Saturday morning. Captain N and Super Mario were some of the cartoons I watched. I also loved watching Looney Tunes on Saturday morning as well. The networks don’t really air cartoons in the morning anymore it seems, or at least anything good to talk about it. I used to love Captain N because I was a Nintendo junkie as a kid. In 1991, NBC combined two of their Saturday morning cartoons into one half-hour TV show and called it Captain N and the New Super Mario World.
Super Mario World started the TV show off and the cartoon was based off the video game of the same name. This is the last of the remaining episodes of both Super Mario World and Captain N. The cartoons for The New Super Mario World follow the adventures of plumbers turn heroes Mario and Luigi, Princess Toadstool, and Yoshi. Toad is absent this time around and if I remember correctly, Toad was quite annoying. The three leave Mushroom Kingdom and head for Dinosaur Land, where they meet up with Yoshi and meet various cavemen.
Captain N is about gamer Kevin being summoned into his TV and he lands in Videoland. Videoland is pretty much everything you would see in a video game, but mostly stuff you would see in Nintendo games. Kevin is considered the Game Master and leads the N Team against villainous Mother Brain, King Hippo, Eggplant Wizard, and Dr Wily. But this season, the N Team battle other things besides Mother Brain. The N team consists of Princess Lana, Simon Belmont, Mega Man, Kid Icarus and Gameboy. Oh, and don’t forget Kevin’s dog Duke!
The third season of Captain N was always a let down to me because the episodes were about 10 minutes shorter than usual, plus the cartoons weren’t that great. Mother Brain, who was the main villain in the previous seasons is barely even in this season. This time around, Captain N battles a bunch of lame people like the Baseball King, and some blocky people in Tetrisland. But the episodes were still entertaining, just not as good as the previous seasons. As far as New Super Mario World, I didn’t like Mario as much as Captain N. I liked some episodes of it, but then those little Koopa monsters were so damn annoying. Maybe my tolerance as a kid to that cartoon was a little better. But still, The New Super Mario World is leaps and bounds better than most of the crappy cartoons that are out now. Same goes with Captain N! It’s just too bad the shows ended on a weaker note…
