I heard about this show but never got a chance to see it on TV. This show was only on for 1 season but there’s a movie in the works so that’s cool. I heard good things about Firefly and that it has a strong fanbase, or cult fanbase if you will. I haven’t gotten through whole set yet (Which I got the whole thing thanks to Fox!) but I will because the show is very entertaining and good. Firefly is set 500 years into the future, and it follows around a ship called Serenity. The ship Serenity has about 9 or so passengers on it and it’s a transport ship. The ship’s captain is Malcolm Reynolds, and he was a defeated soldier, and now is basically antigovernment. How punk rock of him haha. He’s now a smuggler, so just imagine him as Captain Han Solo with the same pants on, same wit, angst and a pistol. He’ll take any job, legal or not, just so the ship can get by. Sometimes the job is too much to handle or they got into something that they shouldn’t have.

This show is totally a space western. People always said Star Wars was, but this actually has a country twangy guitar score to it, and a country theme song that the creator Joss Whedon wrote. That’s one of my negatives I think about the show, the twangy score to it, sometimes it works and sometimes it feels out of place. It works when they are on planets but when the country themed score plays during space sequences, it doesn’t fit. But I guess it makes it different from other sci-fi shows and doesn’t have the same generic thematic score to it. Serenity goes from planet to planet, finding work and all the planets look like they came out of Carson City sometimes. My only other negative is the CGI work to it. The space shots look great but sometimes it looks too cartoony and cheesy for me. On one of the featurettes, the CGI team talked about the graphics on the show and say how Firefly has a different approach to it. There’s zooming and blurriness to the CGI and it makes it look unique and different. I like the zooming effect they do but not the blurry one because it looks unnatural. They were trying to go with more realistic camera shots with the CGI but I think it looks mediocre sometimes. The CGI doesn’t take away from the show at all for me. But what little negatives I have about the TV show, the show is still fun to watch.

One thing geeks will love is the super cute girls on the show. One is Morena Baccarin, a respectable prostitute named Inara (They are now high up on the stature ladder and why shouldn’t they be? hehe) and she’s down right beautiful. Rebecca Gayheart was originally supposed to play this character but I think they went with the a good choice. She’s the type of women where she’ll get off traffic tickets and get free things just for looking so hot. Like in that Seinfeld episode. The other cutie is Jewel Staite and her character is Serenity’s mechanic, Kaylee. Gina Torres is not bad either, she’s the more tough one of the group and knows how to kick some ass too. What makes this show so successful is the ensemble cast. Each one is different and has great chemistry together. Alan Tudyk is the wacky pilot, Adam Baldwin is the tough cowboy who makes sarcastic funny comments, the captain Mal can be pissy and bossy but he’s also the king of sarcasm. The other characters are kind of boring to me like Book, Simon and River. I guess it balances itself out though.

The extras on here are pretty good. There’s a making of featurette, and you can see it in everyone’s eyes that this show was fun to work on and they all got along with each other and it’s something they’ll miss doing. The making of also talks about each character, the show overall, the CGI work, the score and theme song, and lots of other cool things for fans. There’s a couple of other little things on here like blooper reel that was shown at the Christmas party and ending up being the wrap party, a feature on the ship Serenity, Alan Tudyk’s audition reel, and few others. Any Sci-FI fan should check this out, it’s something different and it’s actually quite good too!
