I had no intention of seeing Hot Rod in the movie theaters just because I’m not a fan of Andy Samberg. I just think he’s a Adam Sandler ripoff and still think that. But I was willing to give the guy a chance when the movie came out on DVD. Well now that I saw the movie, let’s just say I wish I had an hour and a half minutes of my life back.

Hot Rod is about wanna-be stuntman Rob Kimble (Andy Samberg). He wears a fake mustache and tries to jump pools and other things like that, just like his dead Father. He keeps trying and trying to be the best stuntman around but obviously, he’s actually the worst. One of the reasons why he wants to be a stuntman, is to earn the respect of his stepdad Frank (Ian McShane). His stepdad is a big time jerk and spares with Rod. But Rod sucks at winning and just wants to be able to finally beat him up. One day Frank falls ill and needs a new heart. The family can’t afford it so Frank’s days are numbered until Rod decides to raise the money himself. He wants to raise the money by performing an Evil Knievel stunt and jump over 15 buses. Besides actually doing the stunt, The main reason why Rod wants to do the stunt, is to get the new heart to Frank so he can kick the crap out of him. Yeah some promising storyline there right?

I put the movie on and within 10 minutes I wanted to turn the movie off. I don’t think I laughed once during this movie and I usually like a lot of stupid comedies. This could very well be one of the worst movies I’ve seen in a long time. I have never liked Andy Samberg and don’t think I ever will. Judging from the box office numbers for this movie, I’m not alone. Samberg will just be subjected to minor YouTube hits on the Internet & SNL and that’s it. I don’t even find that stuff funny either. He even did his usual shtick in this movie as well and it just made me want to fast forward the part. Like his half brother and him were arguing, but it was done in some annoying, DJ way. Them repeating the words over and over and it was pretty brutal to watch. I know this movie was a spoof on 80’s movies (hence the 80’s heavily soundtrack) but there was just nothing funny about this so called comedy.

The bonus features of Hot Rod include your standard stuff: deleted scenes, commentary, outtakes, a behind the scenes featurette and a trailer. The featurette was okay but wasn’t anything special. Isla Fisher had some funny quotes from that. The deleted scenes were okay but nothing that made me think they deserved to be back in the film. I didn’t bother checking out the other things.

There hasn’t been a SNL star since Will Ferrell and looks like we’ll have to wait even longer for the next breakout movie star from Saturday Night Live. Unless this movie was just a fluke, but I just don’t see that happening. Bill Hader has potential to be someone to watch out for though. Andy Samberg’s comedy style is just dumb and very unfunny. Just like this movie.
