One of the best movies of the year is finally on DVD! I saw Sin City in the theaters and just absolutely loved the movie. Sin City just screams COOL! Though, this is just the appetizer DVD until the special, extended edition comes out. I guess it will have to do to hold fans over.

Sin City is based off of Frank Miller’s graphic novel of the same name. The movie is split up into 4 or 5 different storylines and follows around different characters in Sin City. You have an old cop Hartigan (Bruce willis) who vows to save a sexy stripper (Jessica Alba), then there’s a story about Marv (Micky Rourke), an outcast tough guy wanting revenge for his one true love, a hooker. That storyline was my favorite by the way. Also, there’s the story of the red converse wearing Dwight (Clive Owen) who fights some guy who likes to bully woman, & cause ruckus and Dwight gets the help from the Old Town girls. The film opens with a short story from Josh Hartnett, which was actually used to sell the movie to Frank Miller. It doesn’t really have anything to do with the story but it gives you a nice intro to what to expect from the movie. The film stars many many actors & actresses and the movie is just a visual orgasm!

When I first saw the movie in the theater, I was blew away by it. Just the style & look of the film, the amount of actors they got to be in this, the nudity and violence, and it was just an overall fun, entertaining flick! Granted this won’t be for everyone, especially people that don’t like comic book violence or naked girls. The violence is extreme but cartoonish, almost laughable but that’s what I loved about it. The violence at times is the punchline like arrows going through a guy’s body and the reactions to it. Or Marv messing people up, like dragging bodies along in his car or dumping people into toilets. I think if the film was shot normal, it wouldn’t have been as successful or just not as good. The style of the film is the highlight alone! Finally someone who used CG and gets it right! Frank Miller and Rodriguez pretty much shot a live comic book, mostly in black and white and color enhanced certain things on the screen. Between the comic and scenes in the movie, they are pretty much dead on and at times, it feels like you’re reading a comic. The way they even speak sounds right out of a comic. The short sentences, the punchy one liners, characters thinking out loud (trying to figure out how to spell that word!). Everything about the movie felt right.

The plot does tend drag in Bruce Willis’ stories though. His character wasn’t as interesting as the others like like Marv or Dwight. Those two were my favorites and they kicked ass! I can’t believe I’m going to say this, but Mickey Rourke stole the movie! Just the way he did or say things just made his character really likable and cool. He’s a character you definitely root for, but he’s not necessarily a good guy. Dwight seemed like a more of a good guy, but with a dark side to him. After seeing the movie, it made me go out and buy a pair of converse again. I wanted to get them again anyway but seeing Clive looking so cool in this movie, just made me want some converse haha. Yes I know I’m a dork. I thought it was kind of cool to see Elijah Wood & Nick Stahl playing complete psychos, which seems the opposite to what they usual play. Though Elijah Wood’s character pretty much wears what Wood wears all the time. He just doesn’t have long finger nails and eats people, or at least I don’t think he does. It was nice to see good looking woman in this movie, so free and naked too! I was surprised to see Carla Gugino from Son-In-Law get totally nude, because the perv that I am, has been wanting to see her nude for a long time now. And seeing Jessica Alba doing a lasso dance, and Meho! Oh man! Haha. Ok I’ll stop, yes there’s lots of hot women in this movie. That’s all you need to know.

I never read this comic so I don’t know how much is true to the comic books but from what I heard, it sounds like they covered it to a T. Some of the movie scenes just looked like fine art and just magnificent to look at. That jail scene shot with Bruce Willis is a good example of something I’d frame in my house proudly. This movie just looks and sounds AMAZING on DVD! Especially on my 50 inch TV! I thought it would look kind of too CGI on DVD but it really didn’t. It was disappointing to see that there was only a 8 minutes teaser extra on here and that was it. I guess they wanted to get this release out as an appetizer for the big expanded edition DVD, that should be coming out soon. I still would have like to see some extras on here, to hold us over til the next DVD comes out. If you can’t wait for the expanded, special edition DVD, than get this DVD, if not I’d say rent it.
