10 seasons of South Park have been released on DVD now and we’re pretty much caught up with the seasons. There still might be another season to go since there is a new season coming up (I believe). I thought the 9th season had sporadic good episodes, but I think the 10th season just blew that season away. From the first episode all the way to the end, the 10th season is a great example of an animated show that still provides a lot of laughs and also makes you think a little.

The 10th season started on a sad note, with the gruesome death of Chef. Isaac Hayes left the show because Matt & Trey weren’t going to stop doing the Scientology episode. And then some press release got out that Hayes said Matt & Trey were bigots or something. So they felt the need to respond and so they did. Chef went away for awhile, and then suddenly comes back…but something is different. He’s not the same and he starts saying some pretty weird things like let’s have butt sex with the children. It’s like he has been brainwashed, so the kids go investigate and find out he was brainwashed by a bunch of pedophiles in the Super Adventure Club. In the end, Chef is killed off in the most gruesome cartoon death ever seen on cable TV. But besides that episode, there’s lots of South Park episodes that really stand out from the last few seasons. The one that stands out for me is the World of Warcraft episode. The reason why it stands out because it’s just a great spoof on a culture phenomenon I just don’t get. Nothing like wasting hours walking around and collecting potions, talking to other nerds and stupid shit like that. I may spend a lot of time on the computer but at least I’m doing some constructive on it like reviewing stuff or doing artwork…or porn. But anyway, back to the South Park. Other episodes in season 10 include Kyle’s father getting mad at everyone for not driving hybrid cars, South Park takes on Family Guy, Al Gore shows up in South Park to tell them about a serious threat: Manbearpig, someone shits in the urinal at South Park elementary, a hot teacher sleeps with baby Ike, and Satan throws a Halloween bash that has Steve Irwin show up at. There’s more episodes that are great in this season but those were just some of the highlights.

Besides the World of Warcraft episode, the other episodes that got people talking this season was the the image of Mohammad controversy/the Cartoon Wars with Family Guy and then the Halloween episode. South Park made fun of Family Guy pretty hardcore and did a great job of it. I love both shows but what they said seems kind of true. Just setup jokes all the time, with no real writing. It’s too gimmickie. But that doesn’t mean I’ll stop watching the show. The fact that the show is written by manatees seems like a big fuck you to Family Guy. I’m really surprised Family Guy hasn’t fired back yet. Maybe this season they will poke fun at South Park too? The episode was a two parter because Comedy Central didn’t have the balls to have them show the image of Mohammad. So they tried to stretch it out for 2 episodes and see if Comedy Central would change their minds. I don’t really see why it’s a big deal because at the end of the episode they showed Jesus taking a shit on people. And everyone is fine with that? Religion and people can be so hypocritical sometimes. The other episode that got people talking was the Halloween episode where Steve Irwin shows up to Satan’s Halloween party. Of course he has the stingray attached to his chest still. I guess people were upset since it was literally right after his death. I’m more upset that they did it first and I was going to be him for Halloween. I thought I had a great costume all lined up and ready to shock people and then South Park does it. But apparently everyone and their mother was Steve Irwin for Halloween last year so I don’t feel that bad about it. I guess Americans are a bunch of crude and inappropriate douchebags sometimes. I know I can be. Other episodes were just as good in this season as well. South Park seems to be the only real cartoon that has consistently been this good and on top of things. There may have been one or two seasons not up to par but their track record has been very strong.

Like with all South Park DVDs, there are mini commentaries with Matt and Trey. They hate talking about their own work, and hate commentaries so they do little 4 to 5 minute commentaries on each episode. These commentaries may be the only ones I ever listen to when reviewing DVDs because they are good, short and get their point across in that time frame. Other DVD commentaries are just boring and just not that interesting half the time. They talk about all the stuff that goes on with each episode, what they thought about it, and what other controversy surrounded it. Any South Park fan should put on the second audio track first to listen to the commentaries because they are great!

South Park season 10 is definitely a worthy purchase and one of the best South Park seasons I think. Well best in the later years, I don’t think they could ever beat the first few seasons. But still, it’s worth getting if you’re a fan of the animated series.
