I was really looking forward to this one and I think it fell short. Let me explain.

This film didn’t have the same feel the other Austin Powers movies had. You didn’t see Austin hook up with anyone, there’s absolutely no mention of Heather Graham’s character, there’s no Dr Evil henchmen/ seductress going after Austin like the hot ones like Alotta Fagina and Ivana Humpalot or Will Ferrell’s character in the first two. Though I supposed they had to take some of same old stuff out so it wasn’t exactly like the other movies.

The plot, if there is even a plot to this, is about the kidnapping of Austin’s father, Nigel Powers played by Michael Caine. One of Dr Evil’s associates, Goldmember, a peeling dutchman who has a gold john thomas, kidnapped him and brought him back to 1975. There, Austin Powers meets up with Foxxy Cleopatra, an old flame but they barely explain how they know each other in the film. Dr. Evil is sent to prison and escapes and plans on melting the polar ice caps. That’s about it really. Don’t get me wrong though, this movie is freakin hilarious!! A lot of the same jokes, but if something still works, might as well keep using it. More fun with shadows and names, plus a great scene with subtitles. The opening sequence is probably the funniest of the movie and I won’t spoil it. I almost wished they should have made that into the third movie instead. You’ll see once you see the film.

I believe this movie has had the most cameos in any movie. Seriously, there must have been 30 or so big name actors, directors, models, etc. in this movie. Even though a plot isn’t the main thing with the AP movie, this one was seriously lacking than the other 2. At least in the other movies, you can kind of get a sense what’s going on. It’s kind the same problem I had with Men In Black 2, it was really badly edited. Either from censorship (MGM maybe had a part in it for sure) or stuff wasn’t funny enough. I guess they left all the jokes in and forgot to put in a story. I’m just hoping the DVD will contain never before seen footage added back into the film. AP DVDs are always great in my opinion. At least they’ll have outtakes and delete scenes. Besides the plot to this, I thought some of the characters were a little weak. Goldmember was barely in it, yet that’s the name of the film.

I also didn’t think he was that funny, compared to other characters in the film. Some of the things he did were funny or really gross. Foxxy Cleopatra played by Beyonce Knowles did the job well. Michael Caine was a nice edition to the cast, and having him in the movie with Myers was good because he loosely based Austin on some of his characters he played in the 60s. Seeing Fred Savage in a movie was funny, I would have liked to see more of him. Another positive about the movie is Mike Myers definitely gets into character for each role he does.

I keep forgetting those characters he plays are each Mike Myers. That’s how good he is with character acting. When Eddie Murphy does it, you can kind of tell. The movie is still worth seeing in my opinion, but it’s just not as good as the others. I almost wish they cut out that 1 minute song Austin was singing and added more of a story into the movie. It kind of felt out of place even though the song had sort of a meaning to it. I think everyone is thinking the same thing I am, when are they going to come out with just a Dr Evil movie?

Favorite Scenes: Opening scene, fun with shadows, fountain scene, hard knock life prison scene, any scene with Dr Evil.
