It’s March and we all know what that means! St Patrick’s Day is right around the corner. This month’s ReadJunk Playlist is dedicated to Celtic and folk songs that will get you in the green spirit; and well for others the drinking spirit! This playlist is an easy one for me considering this is one of my favorite genres of music and something I listen to all year round. I’m not one of those phony “Kiss Me I’m Irish” people that breaks out their shirt and stupid green and white Mad Hater hat every year. Perhaps this playlist will give you a bit of a variety than just listening to Dropkick Murphys or Flogging Molly. Here we go!

Carbon Leaf’s show tomorrow night (February 25th 2010) at the Egg in Albany,NY has been postponed due to the big ass blizzard heading our way right now. The show will be happening Friday April 16th now! I’m happy Carbon Leaf decided to postpone the show considering I didn’t feel like either eating the tickets or driving through a foot of snow. What’s the cost of a nice snow plow rental these days? Plus, the band might have a tough time getting from Rochester to Albany, where they are playing tonight I believe? You can also see Carbon Leaf play in Teaneck, NJ on April 17th if you can’t make it to the Albany show.

It’s no secret that Carbon Leaf are one of my favorite bands. The Virginia band were tapped to record new material for the sequel to the animated movie for Curious George. The Curious George 2: Follow That Monkey soundtrack will be released on March 2nd on 429 Records/Denon Records. Carbon Leaf will have 6 tracks on the soundtrack, including remixed versions of “Life Less Ordinary” and “Let Your Troubles Roll By.” Besides Carbon Leaf, tracks from Brian Wilson, Jackie Greene, Heitor Pereira will be on the soundtrack. You can hear samples of the soundtrack here. Check out the press release below:

It’s that time of year for everyone to reflect on 2009, and look back at what was great and what wasn’t. Now, it’s my turn. You may see some similarities in lists but whatever, I tried to switch it up. I didn’t get in depth as much as Bryan or Tom’s List but this is what I thought stood out for me in this roller coaster of a year. Have a look at my list, after the jump!

Live Reviews

Date: November 28th 2009
For the last 3 years, Stephen Kellogg and the Sixers have played New York City on Thanksgiving weekend. I decided to check out their show since one of my favorite bands was opening for them, Carbon Leaf. The bands played over 2 nights at Bowery Ballroom. I wasn’t going to dare New York City traffic on Black Friday so I decided to attend the Saturday show instead. Of course there was still some traffic on the George Washington Bridge (like usual).

Carbon Leaf is quickly proving that they are one of the hardest working, touring bands in the country right now. The band is currently ending their first leg of their summer tour, which will conclude in Poughkeepsie, NY tomorrow night at the Loft (Come out to celebrate my brother and I’s 31st birthday!), and then in Portland Maine the next night. Then it’s off for another tour, this time being called “The Bear Rhymes With Woman Tour.” The band will be co-headlining with Stephen Kellogg and the Sixers.

Carbon Leaf’s latest album on Vanguard Records might take you a few listens to really enjoy it. But after that, you’ll realize the band have outdone themselves yet again. The folk rock band from Virginia has two new members, but it’s hardly noticeable. I think that’s a good thing because the new guys have fit right in. “Nothing Rhymes With Woman” is more in line with “Indian Summer” and “Love, Loss, Hope, Repeat” than their earlier, celtic/folkier albums; which is fine by me. I think from “Indian Summer” and onward the band has grown and matured as a band. This is further evidence that Carbon Leaf is one of the best touring folk rock bands around.
