A>S>H>S is pronounced “ashes.” And not, you know, Asshats. Actually, more specifically, their name is short for Audible Stellar Hypnotic Situations. That’s right, they’re trip hop.

I’m a bit of an oddball because I like a lot of trip hop and ambient techno. Blame the kilos and kilos of pot smoked in junior high. Or getting laid during impressionable times to an Orb CD.

In any case, I like A>S>H>S even though it won’t win me too many punk points. But, interestingly, what differentiates them would also repel fans of ambient or punk or anything really – the incorporation of cool jazz.

That’s right – these guys are basically the Yellowjackets fused with a tinny trip hop beat and spacey, ambient production. Hideous, I know, but it’s great chill-out music. Listening to this album gives me a warm, fuzzy feeling, along with acid flashbacks and a yearning for Kenny G. Can’t beat that.

Bottom Line: Pass the hookah.
