Boys and girls, you might have noticed that I’m generally far more generous to indie rock bands than I am to, say, emo or hardcore bands. But, believe it or not, indie rock is not critic-proof. There is definitely such thing as bad indie rock. And The Anthem Sound are bad indie rock. They’re pretty generic guitar-based jangly and punky rock with no consistent sound from track to track, and more than anything, are pretty lacklustre songwriters. I can hear the influences, everyone from Modest Mouse, Bloc Party, Death Cab, Interpol etc. but the problem is their music sounds hollow and soulless. There seems to be no acknowledgement of their music’s own history; rather, the Anthem Sound seem to have mimicked their favourite bands by playing cookie cutter indie rock that really just ends up sounding flat.

Bottom Line: Bland and generic indie rock that doesn’t really do anything The Anthem Sound’s favourite bands haven’t done.
