It’s easy to make fun of the Casualties. In fact, I do it all the time – the music and lyrics are mindlessly simplistic. Their fashions are too put-together. Their mohawks reach heights and colors of exotic plumage, thus confusing migrating birds of paradise.
But in the world of punked-out, colicky, 1-chord street punk that sings solely about being punk, the Casualties are tops. They’re good for shouting out something silly while wearing studded leather, and there are people out there who need that kind of reaffirmation of their punkhood.
For those people, Made in NYC is a great package to get. The first disc is a live CD, featuring over 20 tunes and perfectly capturing their and the crowd’s energy. Even I got caught up in the energy and kept the CD on for most of its run.
The second disc is a concert DVD with behind the scenes footage. I didn’t bother watching it for fear that seeing them prance about in punk costume and walking all cool-like down St. Marks Place would diminish my newfound generosity. Seriously, do these guys have something to prove, or what?
Again, I slip into bias. So let me go back and say that this is a great, energetic introduction to the band, a full set of stuff (it even includes a poster) for fans, and it’s highly ebayable for reviewers. So… good stuff.
