The music is bad college radio rock, but it’s the vocals that really crappify them.
Gyre put forth a breathless, alternarock dude who, when he sings, sounds like he should be fronting a second-rate Pearl Jam cover band. That’s bad enough, but then he breaks into these awful, phlegmy monster-like choking/barking. Screamo bands have the excuse of being in a genre that defines itself by cathartic screaming, but Gyre’s boring, midtempo grunge is not bettered by their clumsy attempts at it.
For this kind of music, the vocalist should be somewhere in the middle – hard-edged but melodic. But I guess they would then be entirely derivative and mediocre. Alas, there is no way for Gyre to win and they should thus break up.
Bottom Line: System of a Down’s Syndrome
