Because this female-fronted group is hailed as a “power-pop experience” and their name brings to mind bubblegum schoolgirly cuteness, I was expecting infectiously upbeat candy-coated punk-inflected pop. The kind of music I’d blast and bop along to, and yet never tell a soul that I liked. Like Gwen Stefani. Not that I listen to her. Umm… yeah. (Call me, Gwen!)

Their actual sound then was initially disappointing. Rather than the kuwaaaiiiii adorable girly pop I was expecting, the music is actually rather… well… goth. Kat’s vocals are vampira sultry, helped along in that vein by reverby effects. Not to mention “Kat” is a pretty gothy name. Right up there with Erin.

The music is a dark, velvety blend of jazzy drumming, funk bass, and alternarock guitars. Not a promising description, but I’m a renaissance man so I can dig it. You’re talking to a guy who puts on Switchblade Symphony when he feels like cutting himself (it helps me FEEEEEL SOMETHING. Or maybe I just have parent and weight issues).

So this album is a warm, fuzzy, psych-like gothy/indie/bar rock thing that’s just poppy enough to not suck, but not catchy enough to be great. Or maybe I’m just giving it too much credit because goth chicks are hot. (Call me, Kats and Erins of the world!)
