This is a fantastic release. Incommunicado do a lot, all at once, and it’s all very new-sounding. I guess they fit in the hardcore genre, but it’s so smart and rich, it’s too big and bold to really fit within anything.

Bursting at the seams of punk and hardcore, the music is explosive and intelligent, with post-punk and indie guitar sensibilities and a metal/prog rhythm section (great basswork, by the way). Background vocals give it a whoa-oh street punk/chant-a-long hardcore feel, but the solo vocals are wonderfully wistful – sounding often like Greg from the Bouncing Souls or even Jesse Michaels (Common Rider era), instead of some lame emocore chump.

The sound is huge and the songs – around 2 minutes each – are surprisingly deep and inventive without sacrificing straight-ahead catchiness and drive. They really are like a hardcore/post-hardcore version of Bouncing Souls – not only vocal-wise, but in having the rare ability to be both intellectual and emotional AND still sound really, really good.

Bottom Line: Smart and non-brutal hardcore punk that ISN’T emo claptrap!
