The Lobotomies hail from Northern Ireland and play subpar gutter punk. There’s nothing unique about them, other than it’s odd to hear a band this derivative in this day and age. (I thought today’s only torchbearer of simple-minded punker-than-punk was the Casualties.)

They’re not altogether terrible – I mean, my expectations for crust-style, big-mohawked punk are exceptionally low, and honestly, it’s still preferable to emo – but they don’t offer much in quality. Musically, they mix in a little thrash and there are some whoa-ohs, but it’s still a brash and uninspired exercise in eye rolling.

The lyrics are political but adorably youthful; the Lobotomies pick the usual easy marks – religion, consumerism, the media, and “apathetic sheep.” However, I did like “Mass Murder Masturbation,” a response to Ireland’s insane Catholic conservatism, and ironically suggesting that if every sperm is sacred, we’re all Hitler every time we rub one out. They don’t say it with those words, but with puerile gems like: “Mass murder masturbation with just a flick of the wrist! Millions dead with every squirt dribbling down your fist!”

I guess the band is fun if you don’t think about it. Add a star if you too are lobotomized.
