Okay, I must be honest. I really wanted to like this CD since Dave Hillyard was really cool and not only agreed to an www.readjunk.com/interviews/the-slackers insulting interview, but answered it in great humor. So I wanted to be cool back and dig this album, but, well, it just ain’t good.
Now, I admit I was never into the Slackers because I can’t stand the off-key, grating vocals, but at least the music is usually really top-notch. On Wasted Days, the Slackers go for a more 60s ska production, but the music is just uninspiring. Most of the songs are way overlong, the instrumentals and dubby stuff doesn’t hold my interest, and certain things on here are plain embarrassing (the horn riff in “The Nurse”, that sermon thing, the Bon Jovi cover, etc.) Sorry Dave, you’re cool, but The Slackers’ appeal continues to allude me. But, hey, props for continuing to do the ska thang.
Tolerable songs: Dave’s Friend, Old Days, Midnight Rendezvous
Dear god, turn it off: Wasted Days, Please Decide, Made Up My Mind
