I always dread hearing the newest from my favorite bands, for fear that they suddenly decided to suck. Inevitably, everyone from AC/DC to Rush to Iron Maiden has made me cringe with new albums. Everyone, that is, except for They Might Be Giants.

They are just incapable of disappointing because even while they experiment in different directions, they always retain their original, uniquely identifiable sound. Mink Car sounds like a cross between Factory Showroom and Lincoln a unique blending of old and new styles. The songs are written like the ones on Factory (“Another First Kiss” is an updated “Pet Name” and “Bangs” and “Cyclops Rock” sounds like Factory outtakes), but the music is more programmed than their later live sound, with Lincoln-era cheap Casio effects.

The whole album is great, but check out the soon-to-be party favorites “Man, It’s So Loud In Here” and “Drink!”, live staple “Older,” and just-good-songs “Mr. Xcitement,” “My Man,” and “She Thinks She’s Edith Head.”
