Secret Weapons of Kung Fu 3…I thought that this was an old school kung fu flick when I first heard of it. I never picked up any of the Kung Fu Records video collections before, so I wasn’t familiar with the name. It is a pretty decent video sampler from Kung Fu Records.

The first string of about five or six videos were from some of my favorite bands…the Vandals, Dance Hall Crashers, Tsunami Bomb, the Bouncing Souls, and I was certainly enjoying what I saw and heard. After this string of videos, the disc started to slack off. There were a couple of hardcore, screamo bands thrown in with an assortment of punk bands. What disappointed me the most was the lack of actual videos on the “video sampler”. The DVD seemed to be a plug for Kung Fu’s “The Show Must Go Off” series with six or seven videos being the live version of the song from “Show Must Go Off”. Personally, I would rather see the actual videos, not the live clips. I don’t think that if I wasn’t already into a certain band that seeing a clip of that band playing live would merit me rushing to the store to pick up their live DVD. I would rather go and see the band in person over watching a concert at home. It’s just not the same you know. Live DVD’s are more for fans that already like a particular band. So more regular videos next time please.

Now I want to point out some of the videos that I liked off this sampler. I liked the live clip of the Dance Hall Crashers mainly because I have yet to pick up the DVD and was interested in seeing if it was worth purchasing. The video for Don’t Stop Me Now (a cover of a Queen tune) by the Vandals was down right hilarious. Warren dresses up as Freddie Mercury and roams the streets of L.A. Awesome! The video that took the cake though, was the fan submission for the Vandals-I Am Crushed. There was a contest held by the Vandals and Kung Fu challenging anyone who thought that they could make video for the band to do just that…and this one was the winner. The video featured a classic Skeletor action figure from He-Man and the Masters of the Universe with a little bit of added extras and who went by the name Evilface. The video was similar to Toy Story. Evilface was unwillingly cast as a villain and was repeatedly beaten and abused by the hero character and his owner. Evilface felt lonely and unwanted and, one thing leading to another, throws himself from a rooftop and plunges to his demise. The video very much echoes the song throughout. Clever. Very clever.

All in all, this video sampler had a good selection from a wide variety of bands on the Kung Fu label. Bearing all of the live clips, there were some cool videos, great songs, and fun times to be had by all. You can pick up the DVD from the Kung Fu Records website for six bucks to boot. Bonus!
