Another Simpsons season DVD is upon us and while the show is not as good it was a few seasons ago, there are still plenty of quality episodes for the fans of long running cartoon to enjoy. I still loved the show while many people were starting to watch other TV series and cartoons. I think the Simpsons lost a lot of its luster and funniness around the 14th season. But I’m sure if I watched those episodes again on DVD, I would like them.
The 10th season doesn’t start off with a Treehouse of Horror like the other Simpsons seasons did. This season, we get the episode Lard of the Dance, where Lisa befriends a girl in the school who is trying to get the other kids in the school to act like adults. Meanwhile, Homer is trying to scheme his way into something else by selling grease. There’s a lot of different episodes on this season that are good, but the one that stands out for me is the Simpsons Bible Stories. I just loved how this episode air on a Sunday, around Easter time and it was all about the bible. Granted I never read the big book, but knew a lot of the references and stuff they were spoofing. I always loved when the Simpsons would do their take on fantasy and historical events. I don’t think those type of episode would have worked in the beginning because they needed to lay down the depth of each character and what makes each of them funny. If that makes any sense to you, I don’t know. But back to the episodes in this season. Other notable storylines this season include Homer trying to be an inventor like Edison, Homer befriends the Baldwins & Ron Howard, Homer becomes a Hippie, Ned and Homer go to Vegas and end up getting married to trash skanks, Homer becomes a bodyguard, and the Simpsons take a trip to Tokyo.
You noticed all the episodes I mentioned before are all about Homer. Well, I find his episodes the funniest, and probably hate the Lisa-centric episodes the most. I just can’t stand her character. Besides the Bible Stories episode, I really liked the episode when Homer becomes a hippie. The music he thinks is hippie music is stuff like Billy Joel, and that just cracks me up. I especially love in that episode when Homer mistakenly puts marijuana into the juice and Abe Simpson and Jasper are acting like Beavis & Butthead. I think the 10th season starts to get too celebrity guest heavy. I think the best characters aren’t the ones that make guest spots, but the Simpsons seem to have at least 1 guest star from this point on. I don’t know, it gets annoying. This season you have people like George Carlin, Fred Willard, Lisa Kudrow, Mark Hamill, Alec Baldwin, Kim Basinger, Ron Howard and…Stephen Hawking?! Um ok, I’m still scratching my head on Hawking but whatever, it was a funny episode. While those guest spots maybe be funny, it just gets out of hand and seems like the writing is focusing on too much on those type of characters. Why not focus on the characters that made the show what it is, instead of trying to sell some gimmick and trying to get people to watch the TV show just because Joe Pesci was on the show. Pesci wasn’t on the show but I’m sure they’ll pencil him in this upcoming season anyway.
I’m sure many people out there will disliked many of these episodes but I’m not sure why. I still think there were plenty of great episodes in Season 10. Sure they were very-Homer related and he seemed to be getting dumber and dumber, but thats still hilarious to me. This DVD is still worth buying if you are a fan of the series because Matt Groening and company put a lot of effort into the DVD production. You get a nice booklet, filled with synopsis on each episode, you get audio commentary on every episode. Plus there’s lots of deleted scenes, crank calls, original sketches and a sneak peek at the Simpsons Movie DVD.
