It’s March and we all know what that means! St Patrick’s Day is right around the corner. This month’s ReadJunk Playlist is dedicated to Celtic and folk songs that will get you in the green spirit; and well for others the drinking spirit! This playlist is an easy one for me considering this is one of my favorite genres of music and something I listen to all year round. I’m not one of those phony “Kiss Me I’m Irish” people that breaks out their shirt and stupid green and white Mad Hater hat every year. Perhaps this playlist will give you a bit of a variety than just listening to Dropkick Murphys or Flogging Molly. Here we go!

The Real McKenzies will release Shine not Burn, their highly anticipated, intimate, bare bones, full acoustic album this summer, sometime in June I believe! The album again will be on Fat Wreck Chords and I’m looking forward to it. It’s a live album, but done acoustically which I like when bands strip away the loudness and just play a bare bones show. See what the band had to say after the break:

Flogging Molly played in New York City last night on their annual Green 17 tour. This time, the tour featured opening acts The Architects and an artist that’s quickly becoming one of my favorite musicians, Frank Turner. While the bands performed excellently, the concert experience at Hammerstein Ballroom left a lot to be desired.

What better way to celebrate St Patrick’s Day with a new Flogging Molly CD and DVD! Flogging Molly have released live music before but not a full-length concert. The same goes with a full-length concert DVD. Their documentary DVD Whiskey on a Sunday was fantastic and this concert is another example of the band’s excellence. Fans will be treated with a double CD and a full bonus DVD of the same concert. This concert was filmed at the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles on September 12, 2009. All of their albums are represented here including most of their newest album “Float.”

The Celtic band Greenland Whalefishers from Norway are finally making a trip over to the United States after all these years. Only problem (for me), is the tour is only happening over in the West Coast. I’m just happy Americans will get the chance to see a band I’ve been listening to for years. If you like the Pogues, you’ll enjoy these guys so be sure to check GWF out if they are in your area!

“Now this punch drunk grinning soul, in its corner begs no more.” Lyrics made more haunting by Flogging Molly’s new music video for their single, “Punch Drunk Grinning Soul.” Originally penned as an allegorical biography about a young man who unexpectedly committed suicide, the video takes the theme one step further and applies it to a malady faced by millions of people the world over post traumatic stress disorder or PTSD.

The Dropkick Murphys are set to released a new live CD & DVD, this time it’s called “Live on Lansdowne, Boston MA.” It will be released on March 16th on the band’s own label Born & Bred Records. DKM must be fans of live CDs & DVDs since this must be their 3rd or 4th live release. Hey, I’m all for it; especially when the Mighty Mighty Bosstones guest appear on “I’m Shipping Up To Boston.” Read the press release and check out the tour dates below:

“Good evening Los Angeles, we’re Flogging Molly and this is what we do.” Those were the first words from singer Dave King on the evening of September 12, 2009, when Flogging Molly took the stage at the legendary Greek Theatre in Los Angeles, CA. For a man who twelve years prior was playing at the helm of what was arguably a local bar band, headlining the Greek Theatre was surely a crowning achievement for him and his six compatriots.

The Dropkick Murphys performed “I’m Shipping Up To Boston” at the NHL Winter Classic in Boston on New Year’s Day. If you watched it on crappy NBC, you might have noticed that most of the song wasn’t aired. Here’s the full video of the band performing at Fenway in Boston, Mass.
