It’s been awhile since the punk rock cover band has made a studio album. BUT these sons of bitches are back with a killer country western cover album that will blow your cowboy hat straight off! After releasing “Ruin Jonny’s Bar Mitzvah,” the super group toured Europe and began compiling songs to record in the country & western genres. Some of the bands/artists that Gimme Gimmes cover are Garth Brooks, Johnny Cash, Hank Williams, Willie Nelson, Jerry Reed, The Eagles, Dixie Chicks and John Denver.

I’m not a fan of country (I prefer western I guess) but I surprisingly knew the majority of these songs. The album begins with a Garth Brooks ditty, and I thankfully never heard of that song before. I’m not a fan of his and probably never will be. But having the Gimme Gimmes cover a lot of these songs makes it tolerable because its not really country. “Ghost Riders in the Sky” is covered second, followed by “On the Road Again,” originally done by Willie Nelson. “On the Road Again” starts out with the band doing the Misfits “Astro Zombies.” I always like when the band does a double dose of covers in a song, but sometimes wish they continue the punk song that they are covering. Bagpipes open up the Hank Williams cover “I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry” and it’s funny because the person who is playing appears to be coughing and not playing them that well. I loved that they covered Jerry Reed’s “East Bound And Down,” which y’all should remember from Smokey and the Bandit! My only complaints with this album is they could have covered some better Johnny Cash songs, and that the album is way too short. It feels like the Cd clocks in at 15 minutes. If you are only doing covers and release a new studio album every 2-3 years, why not record 25 tracks! It will hold us over while you think of the next genre to cover. But this CD shouldn’t be overlooked because they’re playing country songs. I don’t like country and I ended up loving this album! So grab your special someone, get on the dance floor, and line dance to these punk rock country covers! YEEHAW!

Bottom Line: The Gimme Gimmes picked out a bunch of great western songs! Now bring on the Polka cover album!
