Various Artists- “Classic: Riddim Driven”

Album Reviews | Apr 27th, 2010

Genre: Reggae
Record Label: VP Records

Classic Riddim is the latest in Riddim compilations from VP Records, where the the same beat or riddim is used for each artist, and sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. Featured on this compilation are some of Reggae’s “classic” artists like Beres Hammond, Maxi Priest, and Gramps Morgan of Morgan Heritage. Taken in small doses or a few artists at a time and this riddim is a pleasant, cool vibing reggae record.

Kemar “Flava” McGregor, producer for No Doubt Records, produced the “Classic Riddim” and for the most part provided a successful compilation featuring some of the current blend of traditional reggae and lover’s rock. After awhile though, listening to the same riddim over and over, you start to wonder if you stuck in a time warp with hearing the riddim starting off each track. The artists do a good job of making it their own. I particularly enjoyed Tony Curtis, Beres Hammond and Maxi Priests tracks.

Bottom Line: Strong riddim compilation featuring a great roster of reggae’s finest.
Notable Artists: Beres Hammond, Tony Curtis, Maxi Priest, Gramps Morgan, Singing Melody
