I was surprised to get something like this to review to break the monotony of listening to shitty hardcore bands and the same old punk songs over and over again.

Why was I surprised to hear Drifteffect? Well as soon as the vocals kicked in on the second track of the disc, I thought that I was listening to a combination of Pearl Jam, Soundgarden and Jane’s Addiction all wrapped up into one. It wasn’t that grunge sound that most of those bands were known for but the more guitar-driven sound of songs like “Jesus Christ Pose” or “Even Flow”. I really didn’t think that bands played this kind of stuff anymore.

After the initial effect of the time warp had worn off, I made my way through the rest of the album and found myself really enjoying most of the songs, completely skipping a few others and listening to some songs a couple of times in a row. It’s been a long time since I discovered a new rock band that’s worth listening to more than once.

Drifteffect have a guitar-heavy sound that’s not overpowering and the vocals are a mish-mash of Chris Cornell and Eddie Vedder. The songs cover the gamut with a few that seem out of place and tend to drag on longer than I would like them to. Overall, I welcome the sound of Drifteffect in a world that has seemed to forget how to play good rock music without down tuning their guitars so that every song sounds like Black Sabbath meets Godsmack.

Bottom Line: Everybody do the Time Warp! It’s 1993 all over again and I like it.
