Fiction Reform sounds exactly like a second-rate Distillers. I typically like female-fronted punk bands and can get behind gruff vocals, angry lyrics, and straight-up, brash, SoCal punk rock. The problem here is that the songs don’t stand out or try to grip you, making for a long 30-minute listen.

The band seems competent, but songwriting seems lacking. I’m not saying they need to write bubblegum pop hits, but some good riffs and interesting vocal lines could help tremendously. Maybe they should do what made the Distillers successful and have Tim Armstrong ghostwrite their music.

Bottom Line: Come to think of it, the Distillers aren’t that great, either.
