When it comes to bands on Side One Dummy, you never know what you’re going to get. They have been signing a lot of different types of bands lately; less punk, ska and other stuff they used to sign back in the day. I don’t think that’s necessarily a bad thing because this album by JAWS ended up being really good!

JAWS is a bunch of youngsters out of Birmingham, UK and their sound is a mix of Joy Division, Stone Roses and then a bunch of newer bands like CRUISR and California Wives. I guess I can describe their sound like dream pop, alternative music with echoey vocals. This type of style will be greatly appreciated over here in the States and JAWS will get famous fairly quickly.

The first two tracks (“Time”, “Cameron”) will give you an idea on what you’re going to get with JAWS. “Time” takes a little bit to get going but then once the song is half way through, you’ll either be hooked in or wanting to skip to the next track. It reminds me of “I Wanna Be Adored” by The Stone Roses.

My favorite track on the album is “Gold,“ which I believe is the single for the album and was released last year. The title track “Be Slowly” is a catchy, hand-clapping tune that sounds somewhat similar to “Just Like Heaven.” Not sure if it was intended to sound like that but that’s what I hear when listening to the song. Either way I love it!

The rest of the album is much like the first half, moody & dreamy pop, alternative rock that makes me want to break out some albums from the late 80s/early 90s. If you’re curious about this band based on this shoddy review, be sure to check them on Spotify, YouTube or wherever you listen to music.

Bottom Line: Surprisingly awesome UK alternative rock!
Notable Tracks: Time, Gold, Swim, Be Slowly, Surround You
