Mason Reed is a singer/songwriter from, well all over. I didn’t have any expectations when putting this CD but this new EP from Reed has turned me into a fan.

Mason has a twangy, folk rock troubadour style; something you might see in a subway station or in some smokey filled shithole club. I’m not saying that’s a bad thing, but just trying to give you an idea on his music. His voice is similar to Tom Waits but perhaps a bit more country western? He’s got that raspy, raw vocals and I really dig it. The opening track “I Don’t Love Nobody” is a toe-tapping track that has slide guitars and is a bit on the country rock side…but it’s by far my favorite track. “Not Perfect” is more of a folk rock song featuring banjos. Besides Tom Waits, Mason Reed has a similar voice of some other singer/musician and I can’t for the life of me figure it out. I think I might be thinking of the singer Mike Martt from Low & Sweet Orchestra? But Mason has an even rougher and raspier voice.

I wish this EP was longer because this just blew me away. I was expecting to trash the hell out of this, but alas, that wasn’t the case. Mason Reed is the type of musician that works really hard at what he does, and isn’t in it strictly for the money. Go out to one of his shows and buy his album & merch and support this guy. He deserves it!

Bottom Line: Excellent EP featuring an eclectic singer/songwriter & storyteller.
Notable Tracks: I Don’t Love Nobody, Not Perfect, I’m Only Gonna Break Your Heart
