Sundowner is the acoustic side project of Lawrence Arms’ Chris McCaughan. I’ve heard of the name Sundowner but this is the first time I’m hearing the music of them. Chris also used to front The Broadways, which also featured the other Lawrence Arms/Slapstick member Brendan Kelly.

I’m never really been a fan of Chris’ vocals in Lawrence Arms and always preferred Brendan’s instead. I think his vocals work better in an acoustic setting. The first two tracks are okay but it’s not until “Whales and Sharks” that I begin to appreciate their sound. Sundowner combines folk rock, country, and has elements of punk rock mixed in there as well. There are 10 tracks in total and while I’m not sure I’d listen to this album again, it wasn’t bad either.

Bottom Line: Decent acoustic side album from Chris of Lawrence Arms & co.
Notable Tracks: Whales and Sharks, Baseball’s Sad Lexicon, Second Hand
