Synopsis: Davis has been writing about American culture (particularly jazz) for 20 years, and this book is a “best of.”

Good: Davis is like the A.J. Liebling of jazz he writes about his subjects intimately, penning vivid character portraits of his heroes without masking his own enthusiasm.

Bad: I can’t seem to finish any of his articles I get bored, but that’s more because of the subject matter than the author.

Bottom Line: Great essays for jazz afficionados.
