The First Idea counters Noam Chomsky’s notion that language acquisition and symbolic intelligence are hard-wired into humans. The authors argue that emotional responses to environment is what leads to symbolic thinking.

So the nature vs. nurture argument continues, but DAMN – did this book really have to be 500 pages? Academic to the point of obtuse, the points of the book would have been more clearly presented (not to mention a lot more engaging) as a long article, or at least 350 unnecessary pages fewer.
