Barrington Levy is one of my favorite reggae singers. It’s something about his style that I love. VP Records has decided to release a 40-track collection of Levy’s classic tunes from the 70s & 80s. Fans of roots reggae and vintage reggae & rocksteady will definitely want this album!

One of Barrington’s early classic hits, “Collie Weed” starts the album off to a beautiful start. “Don’t Fuss or Fight” and “Shine Eye Girl” are tracks I love to listen to and they are located early on this compilation. I don’t know what it is, but it’s something about this era of reggae that is my favorite. That 70s/80s roots reggae sound just makes me want to sit by the pool and relax. I honestly don’t like the new reggae as it’s more hip hop than reggae to me. Some singers still do the roots reggae though.

The second disc has tracks like “21 Girls Salute,” “Prison Oval Rock” and “Here I Come.” All of those are reggae staples and must be heard if you never listened to them before. I used to listen to a reggae show on the local college radio station, and he would also play “Here I Come.” It’s the song that got me into Barrington. Sweet Reggae Music is classic Barrington Levy and it’s a great compilation to just put on and enjoy. It’s also a good starting point if you haven’t heard of Barrington yet.

Bottom Line: Fantastic collection of Barrington Levy songs from the 70s/80s.
Notable Tracks: Collie Weed, Don’t Fuss or Fight, Shine Eye Girl, Prison Oval Rock, 21 Girls Salute, Here I Come
