The Folk Rock and Americana music scene is thriving; the most it has been in a long time. Cory Mon & The Starlight Gospel’s newest album Turncoat falls into those genres. One could argue they have a blues rock, country, and avant-garde sound as well. Whatever style they play, I’m not sure what to think of the band.

The first track “3 Step” puts you in the mood to watch some Spaghetti Westerns. The song features some impressive twangy guitar playing that sounds like it could be featured in a Western as well. Cory Mon’s vocals takes a few songs to get use to, but still not sure I’m totally sold on this band. I enjoyed a few songs like “Hold” and “Lover Come Home” but I found myself wanting to skip a lot of the songs as well. The band sounds good, if this is your style of music that you like but I eventually got bored with “Turncoats.” Visit their Myspace page and see what you think of the band.

Bottom Line: A decent band but I felt the songs were too inconsistent to like the entire album.
Notable Tracks: 3 Step, Hold, Lover Come Home
