Stone Pony Summerstage opened up their outdoor stage season with Rebelution and friends on Thursday. The popular, reggae rock band were in town to promote their new release just days prior, called “Falling Into Place.” Supporting Rebelution were a nice collection of their pals including Stick Figure, Through the Roots and J Boog & The Green.
Things got started out quite early as I was arriving the first band, Through The Roots, were already playing. I believe Asbury Park has a noise ordinance during the week, as I found out of course after the fact. That’s why the bands started off earlier than they normally would if the show was inside. Grabbed a quick bite across the street, and headed back for most of Stick Figure’s set. Annoyed I missed them by 20 minutes in the pit but caught half of their set. I missed Cocoa The Tour Dog too! Stick Figure were excellent as usual. I wish they had a longer set though. Maybe the earlier start time allowed them to play a little longer. The crowd loved them too.
Next up, J Boog plus The Green were up next and played an hour set. Hailing from Hawaii, the group brought a tropical island vibe along with a reggae, rock, and hip hop blend. By this point, the outdoor area was nearly full with fans arriving. I bet a few were thrown off by the start times even though they did say 4pm doors. It’s not usual that things were so accurate though.
Rebelution were up, just as the sun was setting in front of the stage. Luckily a few buildings blocked it from being so bright. It was a bit tricky earlier on for the other bands. Rebelution started things off with an old song from one of their first records, Attention Span, followed by a new one Inhale Exhale. Things really got going with a fun start when the band broke out crowd favorite “Sky is the Limit.” The horn section really shines during that song as well. After that, I headed back to relax, dance and enjoy the show. The crowd was definitely in a “Reggae” mood as you can probably see from the plume of smoke hovering Asbury Park from several towns away. Rebelution performed for nearly 2 hours and played a nice mix of old and new songs. Some of my favorites were “Know It All,” “Good Vibes,” and “Roots Reggae Music.” For the encore, the band did one of my favorites “Fade Away,” which is a slow tune but perfect for dancing with that special someone. “De-stress” was last and is definitely one of their best songs. It’s certainly an exciting one to finish off a great night.
The weather cooperated, the wind was strong but a cool and comfortable evening. All the bands performed great and created a vibrant atmosphere that left all fans happy. Check out the rest of the tour this summer as this is just getting started!
